Kevin Wood is the Retention Coordinator for the San Carlos Apache College. His duties include making contact with students to ensure their success, performing outreach to the local community, and discussing everything that the college has to offer. He is also in charge of the Ed Ready Placement Test, which he distributes to students to place them in classes based on their current level. He is always looking for ways to improve his work performance to make sure that the SCAC team is well-prepared to serve the community.
Kevin graduated from Gila Pueblo/Eastern Arizona college with his associate’s degree before going on to receive his bachelor’s in Linguistics with a minor in American Indian Studies from the University of Arizona. Having participated in the university’s Native SOAR (Student Outreach Access & Resiliency) program during his final semester of undergrad, it was then that he began to take an interest in helping others succeed. He was also a member of the Campus Community Church (C3)/ Tucson Chinese Ministry, which participates alongside other Chinese Baptist churches in annual mission trips to the Indian reservations in Arizona. During his three years with the group, he got to volunteer up north in White Cone, AZ before spending the next two mission trips at home in San Carlos. He will continue to volunteer with the group wherever they are needed.
Kevin considers himself a small town, country guy at heart and enjoys the slower pace of life. As a nature lover, there’s rarely a day when he isn’t out on a hike with his dogs or gazing up at the stars at night. This has led him to take a greater interest in learning more about the culture and philosophy of indigenous communities including his own. He has a passion for writing, and his other hobbies include journaling, playing video games, and training Brazilian jiu jitsu.
